Doreen Crawford

Principal

Mrs. Doreen Crawford has been principal of Jumoke Academy Charter School since October 2005. She was one of the first teachers hired when Jumoke first opened in 1997. After training to become an administrator Doreen Crawford was appointed principal in 2005.  She is presently the only educator at Jumoke who has been there since its inception. 


Principal Crawford is well known in her community and among her peers. She was honored with the inclusion of her bio and picture in the 9th Edition (2004-2005) of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.”  She was also presented with a citation from the City of Hartford for higher education as a part of Mayor Perez education initiative in 2005. Along with other administrators, she was awarded “Most Awesome Principal Award” from the Greater Hartford Chapter of Christian Educators Association International in 2007 and certificate of appreciation from the “4th Annual Honoring Our Own”, for outstanding contributions made to the residents in the city of Hartford in 2008. Mrs. Crawford also received a community service award for her contribution to education from the Ladies’ Cultural Club of Hartford in October 2008. In July 2009 she was awarded community service award from the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials for citizenship and commitment to the welfare of families, the community and the city of Hartford.  


Doreen Crawford is presently pursuing a doctoral degree, 2009 cohort at Central Connecticut State University. She is a graduate of Central Connecticut State University where she earned her Sixth Year Professional Diploma of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership in 2005. In 2000 she also earned a Masters of Science in Special Education and in 1994 a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.  She also earned from the University of the West Indies in association with Moneague Teachers’ College in Jamaica a Diploma in Teaching in 1990 and Trained Teacher Certification in Elementary Education in 1983.


Mrs. Crawford values community involvement and is a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Hartford and also a member and pass secretary of Caribbean American Society of Hartford. She is an honorary member of the Jamaica Progressive League and pass secretary and member of Blue Hills Civic Association.  She is presently the scholarship committee chairperson for the West Indian Foundation Inc.  A resident of the City of Hartford, Doreen Crawford is committed to educating students to reach their highest social and academic potentials. Her mantra:


“The success of our children depends on a strong partnership between home and school”.
