Measuring the performance of our school is an integral part of Jumoke’s educational philosophy. We accept and embrace the need to frequently and quantitatively assess what our students are learning, both to guide day-to-day instruction, and to predict and measure end-of-year results. Various tests are a natural part of life, and Jumoke must help our students prepare for that.

Since its inception almost fifteen years ago, Jumoke Academy has established itself as one of the top-performing academic schools in Connecticut based on many indicators including the Connecticut Mastery Test and an Overall School Index (OSI) of 90+ on a scale of 100.

This past year, Jumoke Academy saw some of highest CMT test scores in its history, with the 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th, and 3rd graders equaling or exceeding the state average in Math, Reading and Writing.

The biggest jump in test scores came from the one grade where Connecticut students struggle most – 3rd grade. All of Jumoke’s 3rd graders scored 100 percent proficient in math; 91 and 96 percent scored proficient in reading and writing respectively.

Jumoke Academy Honors at the Hartford Conservatory

School of Performing Arts Coming 2012

Jumoke Academy Honors, an award winning academic program is expanding to include a school

of the performing arts at the Hartford Conservatory campus, 834 Asylum Avenue.

With 15 years of experience providing character and academic excellence, Jumoke Academy is expanding

in order to impact even more students.

The new academic and performing arts academy at the Hartford Conservatory

will include:

5th to 7th grade

A rigorous academic program emphasizing math, science and language arts.

Performing Arts: dance, strings, band, theatre arts, piano, percussion and voice

Optional after school private lessons, ensembles and drill and drum.

Supporting Excellence: Giving to Jumoke

On test after test, Jumoke Academy Charter Schools students have kept pace with or outperformed their peers from more affluent suburbs. Their success continues to demonstrate that America’s “achievement gap” need not exist. And unlike many public charter schools, Jumoke Academy has thrived solely on its financial allocation from the state, which itself is set at approximately 68 percent of what urban school districts receive. Jumoke has truly done more with less.

Yet, our financial well-being has come under stress in recent years. We just entered our fourth year without an increase in funding from the state during a time when the cost of living continues to increase in Connecticut and to raise our own costs. Without other resources, we won’t be able to continue providing children in our community the education, character, and social skills necessary to make our society a better place.

We also think about the future. Tomorrow’s students will need to do more than ace a math exam or pass a reading test. They will need to adapt to an interconnected world and a global economy. Educating children for this era involves the kind of academic and extracurricular enrichment generally only available to students in wealthier suburbs. Accordingly, we want to provide courses in foreign languages and engineering, and to see our children partake in afterschool clubs such as robotics or drama or debate. We aspire to offer more athletic programs than our current offerings of cross-country and basketball. And, of course, we dream of serving more students, of replicating our success in partnership with Hartford Public Schools so that every Hartford student has the opportunity to attend an excellent school.

What is a Charter School?

The most important civil rights issue challenging our country today is the equal right to and availability of a high quality education for all children in the United States. With the significant academic achievement gap that exists between socio-economic groups, it is clear that schools across United States are failing a vast number of our country’s children. Most of the children affected are already facing challenges no child should have to, and their schools need to provide additional supports and differentiated programming in order to accommodate their unique needs. During the late and 1980’s and early 1990’s, the development of the charter schools was rooted in a quest to free schools from bureaucracies and provide parents with a variety of public school choices and bringing accountability to a long-ailing system of education. In 1996, the state of Connecticut passed the law allowing for formation of Charter Schools to help address these issues.

But, what exactly are charter schools and why are they so important to the education of today’students?

Jumoke Academy Parents Association

We at the Jumoke Academy Parents Association (J.A.P.A) believe the parents and guardians of our students make a big difference in our children’s education. In schools world-wide, children whose caregivers are involved with their schools have been proven to perform better overall than those whose are not involved. JAPA members work alongside our schools’ teachers and administrative staff to ensure our children receive the education and support they deserve. All parents and guardians of Jumoke Academy Charter Schools students are members (no need to sign up!) and are asked to contribute $5 per child to cover JAPA’sadministrative costs. We invite all of our members to be as involved as they are able to be.

Monthly meetings held on the first Tuesday of each month.

Dr. Michael Sharpe

Chief Executive Officer

Michael M. Sharpe, a graduate of Columbia University, Norwich University and New York University, currently is the Chief Executive Officer for Jumoke Academy Schools in Hartford, CT. Dr. Sharpe began work at Jumoke Academy in 1998 and was appointed its CEO in 2003.

Under Dr. Sharpe’s leadership, Jumoke Academy’s middle and elementary schools have consistently been cited in an independent study based on the Connecticut Mastery Scores as one of the top ten performing urban schools in the State of Connecticut.

During his tenure the school’s enrollment has grown from 150 to over 430 students, including a staff of 75 employees. Its academic program now includes an outstanding Pre-K academy and two academic award winning schools: Jumoke Academy Charter School and Jumoke Academy Honors Middle School. Jumoke Academy middle school has closed the achievement gap between students of color and white students. Jumoke Academy’s 2010 graduating 8th graders had equal to the highest writing and math scores of any school district in the State of Connecticut.

Ms. Dickerson

Jumoke Academy Charter School was established in 1997 by our founder Thelma Ellis Dickerson. We are charged with the sacred duty of closing the academic achievement gap that puts urban and minority children behind their more affluent peers and perpetuates historical inequities in our society. We have come remarkably far in this mission.

When Ms. Dickerson laid the foundation for our vision all those years ago, she started a tiny K-3rd Elementary school of 125 children. Today we have grown to an enrollment of 432 students and serve Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. Jumoke Academy Charter Schools are currently comprised of a Pre-K program (Steps to Prep Early Education Center), an award winning K-5th elementary school (Thelma Ellis Dickerson's Jumoke Academy), and a high-performing 6th-8th grade middle school (Jumoke Academy Honors Middle School). All three schools are located in the historic Blue Hills neighborhood of Hartford, and have succeeded beyond our wildest expectations.

Jumoke Academy is a warm, open organization that enjoys strong parent, family and community support. It is also a supportive school environment. Our talented and qualified teachers come from incredibly diverse backgrounds and bring a rich variety of personal and professional experience, but they all share key values. Our staff is passionately committed to nurturing both the intellect and character of their pupils, as well as helping them attain measurable success.
